Including the correct TRL is not merely a formality\u2014it&#8217;s essential for proposal success and project coherence.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For researchers and proposal writers, understanding TRLs means you can better position your ideas within the broader innovation chain. It also influences the type of consortium partners you need, the kind of outcomes you&#8217;re aiming for, and how your impact pathway is structured. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">Why TRLs Matter in project proposals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>TRLs are not just bureaucratic checkboxes\u2014they are strategic anchors. The project is led by Professor Saskia van Ruth from the Food Supply Chain Integrity department at the University of Dublin. We develop creative interventions and tools through collaborative processes in which <em>making together<\/em> with diverse stakeholders is central. Step by step, we shape potential solutions to complex challenges into tangible and applicable outcomes. This approach is particularly effective when dealing with issues where human behavior, experience, and motivation play a key role\u2014which is often the case in Horizon Europe projects.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/8d.nl\/en\/social-design-method\/\"><strong>social design method<\/strong><\/a> allows us to move fluidly across different TRL levels: from exploring early-stage ideas to developing and testing prototypes within research contexts. Our strength lies in translating abstract concepts into concrete applications that connect with both the user\u2019s world and the project\u2019s objectives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><br\/>What we add to consortia:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We help researchers translate early ideas into usable, testable prototypes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We ensure that design outcomes are aligned with the TRL trajectory required by the funding call.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br\/>This approach not only accelerates technological development but also strengthens societal relevance and stakeholder engagement\u2014factors that (rightly) carry increasing weight in proposal evaluations. In co-creation with both professionals and young participants, our designers developed an initial app concept, supported by wireframes that visualize the structure and gameplay elements. Through a participatory design process involving patients and healthcare professionals, we built and tested a functional prototype (TRL 5\u20136). The effectiveness of the intervention was later assessed in follow-up research, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/research.rug.nl\/en\/publications\/i-see-you-unravelling-pathways-of-recovery-after-critical-illness\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">peer-reviewed publications<\/mark><\/a> and widespread media attention. The project has since laid a strong foundation for further development toward higher TRL levels.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-202c1704e6ea053a9e44c0991ca8eb8d\"><em>This project shows how co-creation and iterative design contribute not only to technological progress, but also to support and trust among users-essential for successful implementation in healthcare.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-light-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c98b79fc42a93ec395d1f775b77e6b68\"><strong>Serious Game for Decision-Making in Zoonotic Outbreaks (TRL 4\u20136)<\/strong><strong><br\/><\/strong>Together with researcher Nienke Beerlage-de Jong, we developed a serious game that helps professionals explore the complexity of decision-making during zoonotic outbreaks\u2014scenarios where human, animal, and environmental health are closely interconnected. The game has been used in educational contexts, including as a data collection tool for thesis research, and tested in a controlled research environment (TRL 4). Here are a few tips to help you navigate them effectively: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Map your current status.<\/strong> Be honest about where your idea fits in the TRL scale. Overpromising hurts credibility. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Build a complementary consortium.<\/strong> If you\u2019re starting at TRL 2\u20133, consider including a design partner skilled in co-design to prototype and iterate toward TRL 5\u20136. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Align outcomes with the call text.<\/strong> Many Horizon calls explicitly mention the target TRL. Use this as a design parameter, not an afterthought. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plan for progression.<\/strong> Make clear how your project will transition from one TRL to the next and what resources or partners you\u2019ll need to get there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-6cc367f20ec549d23c700ae15ffb8efe\">Incorporate TRLs explicitly in your application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Explicitly incorporating TRL logic into your project proposal can increase your chances of success\u2014provided you use it consistently and coherently as a guiding framework throughout all parts of the application. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>In your summary and objectives<\/strong>. Name the starting point as well as the intended final level. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In your methodology.  <\/strong>Explain how you are working toward a higher TRL with each phase of work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In the consortium description.  <\/strong>Make it clear which partner is responsible for what.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In your impact plan.  <\/strong>Link technological maturity to societal utilization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-44534b9546690a98b531ddbb86abf919\">TRLs explained: they\u2019re a tool for structure and clarity!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary, don&#8217;t see TRLs as a limitation, but as a practical tool to build your project in a structured way and align it with grantmakers&#8217; expectations.
